How Long Does Driveway Sealcoating Last in NJ and PA
SealMaster, a pavement sealer manufacturer, says sealcoating is typically recommended every 3 years. The Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association says a sealer applied every two to five years can extend a driveway's service life, and not until the driveway is at least several months old. Angi's asphalt driveway guide says to reseal every two to three years.
How often to reseal
The sources differ a little. SealMaster says sealcoating is typically recommended every 3 years. The Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association says a high-grade asphalt sealer applied every two to five years can extend a driveway's service life and improve its appearance. Angi's asphalt versus concrete guide says asphalt needs a coat of sealant every two to three years.

When to start on a new driveway
SealMaster says new asphalt should cure a minimum of 30 to 60 days and be free of oils before it is sealed; its E-Z Stir instructions say at least four weeks under ideal weather. The Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association is more conservative: do not apply sealer until the driveway is at least several months old.
What sealcoat is for
SealMaster says sealcoating prevents oxidation of the asphalt binder, prevents weather damage, reduces maintenance costs and adds years to pavement life. It also says pavement should be repaired and cracks filled before sealing, so sealcoat is protection for sound asphalt rather than a repair.
